Our Story

We are united by a common mission: to help students discover abundant life in Jesus Christ by equipping them to live faithful lives.

Cooperative Christian Ministry is Charlotte’s Episcopal, Lutheran, Presbyterian, and United Methodist Campus Ministry. These four denominations have collaborated for many years to make campus ministry at UNC Charlotte possible. While the four denominations have a few different beliefs and practices, it is important to remember that people within a single denomination, or church for that matter, also differ from time to time. Niner United is our ministry to UNC Charlotte, and the Faith and Leadership Experience is our work in helping college students transition into emerging adults. Niner United and FLEX celebrates what these four denomunations have in common. In fact, Niner United is a celebration in ministry. We try to make every experience a good one and celebrate the ways God is present in this world. We are an open and affirming campus ministry and welcome everyone.

Our first campus minister, Rev. Dr. Loy Witherspoon, started in 1965. Loy was a New Testament expert and recruited to UNC Charlotte by Miss Bonnie Cone. Niner United is was the first campus ministry at UNC Charlotte and the only one to have withstood the test of time. Witherspoon Hall at UNC Charlotte is named in his memory.

Today we offer worship services, faith formation groups, leadership programs, theological training, mission trips, and many other opportunities for college students to have authentic community so that they may be transformed by the Holy Spirit and share the love of Jesus to all.
