mexicoCost:  This will be our fifth trip to Mexico in the last few years. The trip is projected to be $850. Update: The trip cost will only be your airfare, around $400, unless you have special air discounts or miles you can use.  There is plenty of time to raise funds. Details will be added throughout the semester. Spots to this trip will fill up fast, so make sure to sign-up quickly.

Interested: Email us at leader@campus-ministry.org

Deposit: Deposits can be made in any amount and this is a faith-based deposit meaning that with your deposited money you are securing a spot on this trip and that you will do the work necessary to find the additional funding of the trip.

Mission Project: Popocatépetl is a snow-capped volcano that rises nearly 18,000 feet above sea level, about 65km outside of Mexico City. And this is the site of our spring break misión de popo. This will be our fourth trip working with a Christian school, a Methodist Church, a dental & medical relief brigade and a Christian camp with organic farm.

Food: All meals will be provided except on days of travel – students are responsible for meals at airports, etc..

Lodging: You will lodge at a local school, community center, church or in the homes of dedicated mission providers in the communities surrounding Amecameca. Because of limited space at each location, groups will be subdivided into smaller lodging groups.  Accommodations will include areas for groups to room together by gender. Showers will be available; however, they may be limits on the number of showers per day and availability of heat choice.

Mexico Travel: Each person traveling to and from Mexico will need a valid passport. The U.S. State Department has helpful information on obtaining a passport at their website. Click here for info on getting your passport more quickly. Companies exists that can even get passports done in just days. For a listing of these go to GoodSearch.com and search for “rush passports.”

Medical / Health Info: UNC Charlotte requires of its students the following: DTP (Diptheria, Tetanus, Pertussis) or Td (Tetanus, Diptheria); MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella); Polio or poliomyelitis; PPD or TB skin test (based on foreign travel). Make sure you are up to date with at least these. The following you may want to talk to a doctor about:

  • Hepatitis A or immune globulin, b/c of food or water contamination.
  • Hep B is not necessary b/c we will not be providing medical care
  • Typhoid vaccine
  • Remember don’t play with dogs, etc. b/c most are not vaccinate for Rabies
  • CDC is currently showing Malaria risk in the Mexican states of states of Chiapas, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Sinaloa – none of which we will enter. We will be staying in the state of Mexico and we will fly into the Federal District. If you are concerned you can let your MD know and he or she will help you through this.
  • During our Saturday meeting we will go through details on preventing health problems while in Mexico. If you go to a doctor for updates, ask for a copy of the latest Travax report for Mexico which you can have on hand. Also the CDC has a great website with lots of info: http://wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/default.aspx

Funding the Trip:

  • Personally invest into your own trip. Determine how much you can afford to contribute to your own experience. If you work, your employer may match your investment. See our support page for details.
  • Ask parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, and family friends to help sponsor you on this trip. The team leader can help you with the details of “the ask”
  • You may ask any church where you, your parents or your grandparents are members. However students should NOT ask any other church unless specifically “assigned” by the trip leader. This is just good practice.
  • The trip leader may ask you to participate in finding corporate sponsors.
  • Donations can be made online or by mail (see our support page or use the ‘donate now’ icon at the right). You or your sponsors can make gifts to UCF toward this trip through Facebook causes: Support UCF.
