Experience
The Nation’s Capital is at the center of the country’s tourism industry. The Washington scenery, museums, historical monuments and parks offer tourists thousands of opportunities. As the capital city the DC arts, culture, and shopping scene are world renown. However, Washington DC struggles with vast issues of poverty and homelessness. While this occurs in Charlotte as well, a trip to DC allows students to centrally focus on the issues and learn ways to immediately implement interventions and plan long term for the elimination of homelessness.
Cost
$400 all inclusive of food, housing, ministry training, team supplies, transportation, and trip insurance.
Location
Students will serve in downtown Washington, DC for the duration of the trip.
Lodging
Accommodations there are dormitory style life. We will sleep on mattresses provided in a church fellowship hall to significantly reduce the cost of the trip. The church is equipped with showers, and safe storage for baggage. As a group we also prepare our own meals and when not, eat at very low costs. The church is located just off a metro-stop which is ideal for our travel within the city.
Daily Activity
Students will work daily in agencies around DC that help the homeless. This includes serving food at soup kitchens, volunteering in clinics, and assisting in shelter work. During the afternoon students will have the opportunity to visit denominational offices in DC and learn how the church intersects politics. During the evenings we will have the opportunity to sightsee and work in shifts at various shelters.
Leaders
Each trip has two basic leaders. Both the student leader and the non-student advisor are hand-selected and are trained for their specific trip. Please do not hesitate to connect with your trip leaders whenever you have a concern or question.
Fundraising
UCF leaders and staff will help each student with fundraising. It is very important that your fundraising align with the ethics and values of UCF and align with other team members. Each student will have their own account set-up to receive donations online and by mail.
Security
We take your safety and security as a top priority. We actively track current events and trends of our mission locations to ensure a safe and effective mission.
